Frequently asked questions
When my fur baby was constantly scratching and I was in search of answers I came across a lot of information that led to more questions and curiosity, so I know how that feels and hope this answers some of the questions you may have.
Understanding your dog’s gut health can be a game-changer for their overall well-being. Probiotic and prebiotic treats are popular tools for maintaining this balance. Here are some of the most common questions pet owners ask.
What is a probiotic?
A probiotic is a supplement containing live, beneficial bacteria and yeasts that live naturally in your dog’s gastrointestinal tract. When administered in adequate amounts, these “good” bacteria help maintain a healthy microbial balance, crowding out harmful bacteria that can cause illness.
What is a prebiotic?
A prebiotic is a type of non-digestible dietary fiber that acts as “food” for the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) already in your dog’s gut. Unlike probiotics, prebiotics are not live organisms; they are fuel that helps the good bacteria grow, thrive, and remain active.
What is Inulin?
Inulin is a specific type of prebiotic fiber, most commonly sourced from chicory root. It is a fructan (a chain of fructose molecules) that passes through the small intestine undigested. Once it reaches the colon, it is fermented by the beneficial bacteria, supporting digestive health and helping with nutrient absorption.
What are some reasons to give my pet probiotics?
Pet owners typically use probiotics for several key health reasons:
Digestive Support: To manage occasional diarrhea, gas, or bloating caused by dietary changes or “indiscretions” (eating things they shouldn’t).
Antibiotic Recovery: Antibiotics kill both bad and good bacteria; probiotics help replenish the “good” ones after a prescription.
Immune System Boost: Since roughly 70-80% of a dog’s immune system resides in the gut, a healthy microbiome helps them fight off infections.
Stress Management: Stress from boarding, traveling, or fireworks can disrupt gut flora; probiotics help maintain balance during these times.
Skin & Coat Health: A healthy gut can reduce inflammation, which often leads to fewer skin allergies and a shinier coat.
How do probiotics and prebiotics work together?
Probiotics and prebiotics have a symbiotic relationship. When a supplement contains both, it is often called a “symbiotic.” The prebiotic provides the nourishment (the meal), and the probiotic provides the beneficial workforce (the bacteria). Without prebiotics, the good bacteria might not survive long enough to provide significant benefits.
Can I give my dog human probiotics?
It is generally not recommended. A dog’s digestive system has a different pH and a different natural makeup of bacterial strains than a human’s. For the best results, only purchase supplements specifically formulated for canines such as the ones in our products.
Do Healthy Paws products contain both probiotics and prebiotics?
Yes, Healthy Paws Probiotic products contain both prebiotics (Inulin) and probiotics (Bacillus coagulans) specifically formulated for canines. Additionally their is specialized method in which our products are crafted to ensure the highest quality and efficacy of both our prebiotics and probiotics within our recipe.
